A Player to Watch: Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5-Max

Qwen 2.5-Max was released by Alibaba’s cloud division on January 29, 2025, as part of the Lunar New Year festivities. It comes at a time when established tech companies along with others are under pressure to catch up with upstarts like DeepSeek. It is said to be better than leading models on many benchmarks, including Arena-Hard, LiveBench, LiveCodeBench, GPQA-Diamond, and MMLU-Pro, according to Alibaba.

DeepSeek’s Rapid Ascendancy

Now, a recent AI landscape disruptor in the form of a new Chinese AI startup called DeepSeek has emerged with its V3 model and subsequent REASONING (R1) model. These models have been praised for their high level of performance and cost efficiency, taking on traditional players in the space. The success of DeepSeek has spurred both domestic and foreign competitors to act swiftly.

Responses From the Industry and What It Means

As a result, this has raised tech-led selloff in the U.S. and Europe. In response, some companies, like Alibaba, have thrown their resources into AI development. Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5-Max is marketed as a direct rival to this, with the intention of winning both market share and technological primacy.

Looking Ahead

With AI models from companies such as Alibaba and DeepSeek being released only recently, this is a dynamic and competitive industry. The competitive landscape of consumer-focused AI tech is about to get a lot more interesting, with implications for global tech competition and the future of AI apps as these companies compete to be the go-to tool for creators.
